Vertex Cuts

چکیده
Given a connected graph, in many cases it is possible to construct a structure tree that provides information about the ends of the graph or its connectivity. For example Stallings’ theorem on the structure of groups with more than one end can be proved by analyzing the action of the group on a structure tree and Tutte used a structure tree to investigate finite 2-connected graphs, that are not 3-connected. Most of these structure tree theories have been based on edge cuts, which are components of the graph obtained by removing finitely many edges. A new axiomatic theory is described here using vertex cuts, components of the graph obtained by removing finitely many vertices. This generalizes Tutte’s decomposition of 2-connected graphs to kconnected graphs for any k, in finite and infinite graphs. The theory can be applied to non-locally finite graphs with more than one vertex end, i.e. ends that can be separated by removing a finite number of vertices. This gives a decomposition for a group acting on such a graph, generalizing Stallings’ theorem. Further applications include the classification of distance transitive graphs and k-CS-transitive graphs.

Complexity and Applications of Edge-Induced Vertex-Cuts
Motivated by hypergraph decomposition algorithms, we introduce the notion of edge-induced vertex-cuts and compare it with the well-known notions of edge-cuts and vertex-cuts. We investigate the complexity of computing minimum edge-induced vertex-cuts and demonstrate the usefulness of our notion by applications in network reliability and constraint satisfaction.

متن کاملMost balanced minimum cuts and partially ordered knapsack
We consider the problem of finding most balanced cuts among minimum st-edge cuts and minimum st-vertex cuts, for given vertices s and t, according to different balance criteria. For edge cuts [S, S] we seek to maximize min{|S|, |S|}. For vertex cuts C of G we consider the objectives of (i) maximizing min{|S|, |T |}, where {S, T} is a partition of V (G)\C with s ∈ S, t ∈ T and [S, T ] = ∅, (ii) ...
متن کاملContiguous Minimum Single-Source-Multi-Sink Cuts in Weighted Planar Graphs
We present a fast algorithm for uniform sampling of contiguous minimum cuts separating a source vertex from a set of sink vertices in a weighted undirected planar graph with n vertices embedded in the plane. The algorithm takes O(n) time per sample, after an initial O(n) preprocessing time during which the algorithm computes the number of all such contiguous minimum cuts. Contiguous cuts (that ...
